(KMOV) -- Eureka could soon begin cracking down on teens that are caught texting and driving.

Missouri law prohibits any person under the age of 21 to send, read, or write a text message while driving.

Eureka Board of Alderman members are considering Tuesday an ordinance that mimics that state law.

Putting this law on the books in Eureka gives officers more teeth to handle these cases in a municipal level.

According to the state law, violators of the texting law are fined $20.50. Eureka has a lot of teen drivers passing through with Six Flags in the city limits.
