(KMOV) – An elderly woman is in the hospital after a fire broke out at her home in north St. Louis early Monday morning.

According to firefighters, a 90-year-old woman was sleeping in her home in the 2400 block of Whittier when the blaze started around 3:30 a.m.

Authorities say more than two dozen firefighters responded to the scene and found the woman less than six feet away from where the fire started.

She was taken to the hospital in critical condition with what appeared to be smoke inhalation.

Officials say the fire most likely started in a utility room. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
