EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (KMOV.com) -- While federal investigators were collecting evidence at his house and at the Edwardsville Police Department, Police Chief James Bedell was busy writing his resignation.

He's being investigated by the FBI and the IRS, but he has not yet been arrested.

The FBI says it's still very early on in this investigation. The Edwardsville city administrator tells me that, so far, it appears that the investigation starts and stops with Bedell.

I went by his home tonight, abd he did come to the door but didn't open it.

A neighbor tells me she knew something was going on when she spotted plain-clothes detectives in unmarked cars at Bedell's house today.

The US Attorney's Office will be responsible for filing any federal charges possibly connected to this case.

The city is also answering subpoenas for evidence.

In the meantime, Major Don Lask will step into the chief's role until a permanent replacement is found.
