The most recent East St Louis police chief resigned late last week. Ranodore Foggs was only on the job since May when he announced that he was leaving the post.

Tuesday, three sources told News 4 that the city is considering hiring former East St Louis Chief Michael Baxton.

Baxton currently heads the Alorton, Illinois police department.

He resigned as East St Louis police chief back in 2009 after a series of News 4 investigative reports revealed that Baxton had a criminal arrest record and that Baxton wrote a letter to Illinois State Police, saying that their help was no longer needed to solve local murder investigations.

Tuesday, Mayor Alvin Parks said that he has spoken with Baxton in recent days, but did not offer the former chief the job.

"I don't want to get into the particulars just yet, but we will be making some announcements, here, in very short order," said Mayor Parks.

Mayor Parks said the city would look at any candidates "whole body of work" to make a decision.

The city manager makes the hiring decisions.  Mayor Parks said that he hoped to announce a new police chief by Friday.
