(KMOV) – Crews that treated St. Louis City and the Metro East roads may not have been out at the earliest time to treat the roads, but when they did…they were effective in making for a smooth commute.

City road crews did not start applying rock salt to the streets until the temperatures started to fall.  It cost the city around $50,000 for the treatment, but it was a gamble that paid off.

Illinois Department of Transportation officials admit that the problems in Missouri gave their crews a heads up on how to treat their roads.  IDOT also recognized the dropping temperatures at 5:15 a.m. and chose to act at that moment.

No highways in the Metro East were forced to close this morning.
