(KMOV) – Thousands of drivers came across flashing red lights at nearly 200 intersections around St. Louis county Tuesday morning.

Most of the malfunctioning lights were centered around Clayton, Maplewood, Richmond Heights and University City areas. A few light issues were also reported north and west of the county.

Drivers experienced the flashing lights at 9:30 a.m., missing the morning rush hour.

David Wrone, manager of Highway and Traffic Public Information states “fortunately, we have not seen any mayhem on the roads. It could have been a lot more complicated than it was. The timing actually worked to our benefit.”

Repair crews were out most of the day resetting the lights. Although officials are still trying to figure out what actually went wrong.

“Well, at this point, we are trying to solve the mystery. This was very unusual circumstances, unprecedented in our history,” Wrone added.
