(KMOV.com) – Many drivers told News 4 a stretch of Interstate 55 in Madison Co. where there was a fatal wreck Thursday does not have adequate signs to show it is a construction zone.

Police said Michael Shultz, 35, of Mount Olive was killed when he drove into traffic that was stopped in a construction zone near Hamel.

Eyewitnesses told News 4 the highway was down to one lane. A truck with a sign telling driver to get over, and a state trooper directly behind the truck with its lights on were there as a warning.

Several drivers who were at the scene said all of the warnings were only a few hundred feet from the construction zone giving motorists only seconds to react.

IDOT refused to comment on the accident.
