(KMOV) – One person was killed and another critically injured in a crash involving a box truck in Jefferson County Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol two people were in the truck when it veered off the road near the intersection of County Highway CC and Sunnyside Drive shortly after 1 p.m.  in Olympian Village.

Authorities say the truck slammed into some trees before catching fire.  The driver, Michael Akers, 58, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The passenger, Christopher Akers, 19,  was airlifted from the scene to a St. Louis hospital where they are listed in critical condition.

The crash happened as the Akers were in a box-truck returning to church after picking up food for the pantry.

No other vehicles were involved.
