(KMOV.com) – Police say a suspect driving a stolen vehicle failed to yield to officers and hit multiple vehicles before crashing head-on with a truck in south St. Louis on Wednesday.
Sgt. Al Nothum with the Missouri Highway Patrol said a trooper was on westbound Interstate 44 at Jefferson Avenue on Wednesday morning close to 9:00 a.m. when they saw a red Dodge Charger traveling at a high rate of speed and weaving in and out of lanes.
The trooper attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the suspect continued driving.
"Pursuits are dangerous, we know that and pursuits are monitored by our command staff this one happened really fast," Nothum said. "As soon as our trooper called out pursuit, within seconds he was already striking vehicles so it happened very quickly."
The suspect then exited at Hampton Avenue, sideswiping two cars on the off-ramp. The driver then turned right heading toward the St. Louis Zoo and struck a white Ford F-150 pick-up truck head-on.
The suspect was taken into custody at the scene. Nobody was seriously injured. The trooper was not involved in the crash.
Police later determined the Dodge Charger was reported stolen out of St. Louis County.
"This could have gone south very quickly quickly" Nothum said. "But luckily it did not."
