ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -- Downtown business owners are keeping a close eye on talks between the NHL and the players' union, hoping the regular season will not be affected as collective bargaining talks resume.
The NHL announced Thursday it had canceled the entire preseason. If the lockout affects the Blues' regular season, St. Louis businesses could lose thousands of dollars.
Maggie O'Brien's bar is a popular gathering spot for hockey fans, both before and after Blues games.
Owner Eddie McVey said he hopes he will not have to let workers go, but he is already cutting back shifts.
"Where we would normally have on a Blues night four to six bartenders behind the bar, probably looking at two," McVey said. "On a service end of it, for the waitresses, looking at six to seven dropping down to three or four...so there's less shifts available, no doubt about that."
McVey said patrons usually stick around an extra hour after the game if the Blues win. He said the better the Blues season, the better his business does.
