(KMOV) – Crews were working to repair a natural gas leak in University City caused by a downed tree from Thursday morning’s severe storms.

According to Laclede Gas, a tree fell over and damaged a 2-inch natural gas main across from Ruth Park golf course near McKnight.

Officials from Laclede Gas say that the gas line was turned off around 7 a.m. Laclede gas officials say about 57 homes were without gas because of the broken main. All residents affected by the leak were under a mandatory evacuation.

Officials say they hope to have the main fixed by Thursday afternoon. Authorities were asking other people to avoid the area if possible.

Fire officials tell News 4 no injuries were reported.

Several residents in the area reported a stench of gas in the area after possible tornadic activity moved through the region Thursday morning.
