ST. CHARLES COUNTY, Mo. (KMOV.com) -- A sheriff's deputy rescued a woman from freezing-cold water after her vehicle rolled into the Mississippi River on Friday night.
The accident happened near the intersection of Highway 67 and Riverlands Way in West Alton, Mo. around 9 p.m.
A deputy was on patrol in the Lincoln Shields Recreation Area, a part of Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary, when he reportedly saw a car traveling at 30 to 40 miles per hour head straight into the Mississippi River. Authorities say the deputy jumped into the river and pulled the female driver to shore.
Police say the woman later told officers she was attempting to commit suicide. The woman was taken to the hospital to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.
Crews were expected to remove the vehicle from the river late Friday night.
