EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (AP) -- A Missouri couple have been sentenced to more than two years in prison, nearly six months after they pleaded guilty to fraud and other federal counts involving their southwestern Illinois day care center.
Forty-year-olds Robby Owens and Monica Owens of Clayton, Mo., admitted in federal court last summer in East St. Louis that they failed to pay taxes for more than $1.2 million in earnings from 2004 to 2007.
The owners of Great Kids Inc. in East St. Louis also admitted they received about $150,600 in federal money for kids who didn't attend the day care.
Federal prosecutors say the pair owes more than $249,000 in taxes.
Both defendants pleaded guilty to tax evasion. Monica Owens also pleaded guilty to stealing funds from a federal program and defrauding food stamp benefits.
