Gov. Nixon selects day to pick Rep. Emerson's successor

JEFFERSON CITY (KMOV.com) -  On Tuesday, Missouri Governor Jay Nixon announced a special election to fill the seat of resigning Congresswoman Jo Ann Emerson will take place on June 4.

The Republican Congresswoman announced in December she would leave Congress in February to become President and CEO of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association.

The Eighth District comprises all of southeast Missouri and also includes Ste. Genevieve, St. Francois, Perry, Washington, Iron Counties, as well as a portion of Jefferson County.

Emerson has represented the Eighth District since 1996 when she succeeded her husband Bill, who died that year. The latter Emerson had held the seat since 1981.
