(KMOV.com) -- A surprise inspection by the Department of Corrections of the Saint Clair County Jail resulted in criticism toward the county for having too many prisoners and not enough space.

It’s reportedly an ongoing problem the county is trying to fix, and the hope to get the problem address before the federal government steps in.

Sheriff Rick Watson says if it comes to that, he’s worried who will have to pay for improvements.

“The taxpayers. And we don’t have any control over it then,” he said. “If they say you gotta do it then you have to do it.”

The solution to the problem could lead to drastic measures, even the early release of some prisoners.

News 4’s Ray Preston asked the sheriff what the county plans to do.
