(KMOV) –St. Clair County State’s Attorney Brendan Kelly has issued charges against a DNA profile, not an identified person, in connection to a 2005 rape in the Metro Area.

Kelly charged a John Doe with an identified DNA profile with one count of aggravated criminal sexual assault and one count of criminal sexual assault on Thursday.

The alleged assault took place in East St. Louis around February 13, 2005. The same suspect is allegedly linked to four other sexual assaults, taking place between 1997 and  2008.

The reason Kelly charged the DNA is because the statute of limitations is set to run out soon. He wanted to file charges before it becomes too late to charge a person.

Kelly stated “By charging his DNA profile, time is no longer our enemy. Justice will find him sooner or later.”

This is the first St. Clair County prosecution initiated by charging a DNA profile of a defendant.
