2 hospitalized after explosion at Olin Brass plant near Alton

(KMOV) – Two people were hospitalized following an explosion at the Olin Brass plant in East Alton on Tuesday.

The Wood River and Alton fire departments were among several agencies on the scene after the explosion happened in the 300 block of Lewis and Clark Blvd.

An Arch helicopter was sent to the scene and airlifted one person to Mercy Hospital in unknown condition.

GBC Metals, who owns the plant, told News 4 one employee was taken to Alton Memorial Hospital for observation, but was later released and went back to work. 

The company said it and the Occupational Safety and Hazard Administration (OSHA) are investigating the cause of the fire.
