(KMOV) – While the rumors have emerged before, it appears Swedish furniture giant IKEA could finally be coming to the St. Louis area, according to Nextstl.com.
According to the report, sources say the company intends to build its first a 300,000 sq. ft. store near the Laclede Gas and Salvation Army rehab center on Forest Park Ave. between Sarah and Vandeventer. That would be close to the St. Louis University campus.
IKEA has 38 stores in the United States and 285 locations in more than 20 countries.
In September, St. Louis residents who were hoping for an IKEA were disappointed when the retailer said it was building its next Midwest store in the Kansas City area.
Located about eight miles west of Kansas City, it’s expected to open in the fall of 2014.
But officials at the time said St. Louis was still on the list, and they have physically been to the area looking at different sites.
But they wouldn’t say where specifically they’ve looked.
“When you’re looking for anywhere between 15 to 30 acres of land adjacent to interstate with good access and visibility, your options are limited,” said IKEA spokesperson Joshua Roth.
