MADISON, Ill. (AP) -- Authorities say extreme heat probably caused the death of a 74-year-old southwestern Illinois man in his home.
Madison County Coroner Steve Nonn says David Richardson's body was found Wednesday by police asked to check on his well-being after a letter carrier reported mail accumulating outside his Madison home.
Nonn says the home's air conditioner was not functioning, and the windows were shut.
Officials said that even after emergency responders vented the home, the temperature inside was 96.5 degrees.
Nonn says Richardson may have been dead for days, noting that the last known contact with him was six days earlier.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
