(AP) -- A contractor has been ordered to spend a year and a half in federal prison for evading taxes and making illegal payments to get asbestos-removal contracts at a southwestern Illinois air base.
The Belleville News-Democrat reports that Stephen Sweet, 53, of South Roxana also must pay a $52,400 fine and roughly $227,000 in restitution.
Federal prosecutors say the owner of Lake Environmental Inc. and Abatement Management Inc. admits filing a false federal tax return after diverting business funds to his personal use without declaring those funds as personal income.
Prosecutors say Sweet made payments in 2009 on an Air Force contracting official’s behalf to get asbestos-removal business at Scott Air Force Base, near St. Louis. Sweet paid $6,000 to fix the official’s car and home heat and cooling.
