(KMOV) -- A 5-year-old boy transported to the hospital after a fire swept through two homes in north St. Louis Wednesday morning has died, police say.

Authorities said two adults and four children were inside a home in the 4500 block of Emerson when the fire broke out around 10:35 a.m.

Everyone managed to escape but a 5-year-old child, who got trapped in the home.

As soon as firefighters arrived, they learned the child was inside and immediateily went in and found him on a first-floor bedroom.

"I just kinda scoop and picked him up and got him out as quick as we could  and ran him down to the medic unit and turned him over immediately to the medic unit," said Jake Buhnerkempe, who rescued the boy.

He was taken to Children’s Hospital, where he later died.

One of the adults was also treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

After getting the child out of the house, crews eventually got the fire out. The home was destroyed, while the second home sustained damage on the outside.

Neighbors told News 4 the ages of the four kids who live in the home range from 6 months to 6 years old.

According to firefighters, the home where the fire started did not have working detectors.
