(KMOV) – A Ferguson daycare bus driver claimed he was just trying to get a 6-year-old boy’s attention when he threw an alcohol bottle at the child.

The boy’s mother is not buying the driver’s claim because she said he tried to bribe her son to keep quiet about it.

“I called the police on the way to the daycare because I knew if I would have seen him when I went in there I probably would have lost my mind on him,” said Lashawn Bender.

Bender saw her son, Malachi, with a bloody, swollen lip after she arrived at the Future Geniuses Learning Center. She said he came into school and said the driver hit him in the mouth with a bottle of alcohol.

Ferguson Police say the driver, Brian Starks, 42, told investigators the whole thing was an accident.

The child said “He [Starks] told me don’t tell your mom,” after Starks bought him soda and beef jerky.

An official with the learning center said they are investigating the incident but had no further comment.

Bender said her son is never going back to the center but wonders how many other kids may have been silenced.

“You can't buy a kid a video game when you do the wrong thing, and tell them don’t tell your mom and they’re quiet,” said Bender.

Authorities say Starks could face possible assault charges.
