(KMOV) – A Parkway West Middle School student has advanced to the finals of the Scripps National Spelling Bee Wednesday in Washington D.C.
For the third year in a row, Gokul Venkatachalam is representing the St. Louis area at the national spelling bee. He is one of 12 students to advance to the finals.
The 13-year-old Chesterfield boy finished 19th in 2013 and 10th place in 2012.
The competition began Wednesday with more than 280 students from around the country. But only 46 spellers advanced to the semifinals using scores from onstage words and a computerized spelling-vocabulary test.
The winner gets more than $33,000 in cash and prizes.
