(KMOV) -- Charges have been issued against a 26-year-old man accused of shooting a student who was walking home from school Tuesday in University City.

Isaiah Romell Cleaves was charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action.

Authorities say a group of students were walking home from the Lieberman Learning Center near the intersection of at 81st Street and Blancha Drive around 3 p.m. when a car with four people inside pulled up.

Police say Cleaves leaned out the vehicle and shot the 19-year-old victim in the head with a 9mm pistol.

The victim was transported to the hospital, where he remains in stable condition.

The victim’s brother told News 4’s Jasmine Huda he does not know who Cleaves is and says it’s unclear to him why anyone would target the teen.

Cleaves is being held at the St. Louis County jail on a $500,000 bond.
