ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -- Women working in retail are urged to be more vigilant about their safety for the holiday season.

Police say women are often considered easy targets for criminals because retail employees work longer hours.

There’s also more shopping traffic in and out of stores, and unfamiliar faces. Wednesday, the Central West End initiative will discuss different safety concerns for women working in retail.

Nina Engelsmann, owner of Ivy Hill Boutique, says it’s a great reminder to be aware of the risks women face in the holiday shopping season.

“When you’re in a certain situation, we all are human- we panic,” she said. “It’s always good to have those things on your mind when you’re in a situation like that.”

Wednesday night’s discussion is at 7 p.m. at the Schlafly Library in the Central West End.
