(KMOV) – A Washington, Missouri YMCA camper accidentally fired a bullet during camp after bringing multiple .22 caliber cartridges and hitting one of them with a rock on Friday.

“They (staff) described it as a ‘pop,’” said Executive Director Debbie Toedebusch. “I have to commend my staff. They did an awesome job.”

Toedebusch says when the bullet was fired, the staff responded “instantly and appropriately” by calling police and separating the boy from the rest of the campers. Camp staff also notified every parent of every child at camp before they were picked up that day.

“We are a pretty close-knit community out here in Washington,” Toedebusch said. “We wanted to make sure all the parents heard from us. The procedures were in place. The kids were fine.”

Washington Police Chief Kenneth W. Hahn says they have turned the incident over to investigators and they are “handling the situation appropriately.”

The investigation is ongoing.
