(KMOV) -- St. Clair County officials issued an executive order banning all open burning until April 1 in light of recent brush fires.

"Right now we just want to get the word out,” Herb Simmons of St Clair County Emergency Management said. "We've had not only grass fires, but we've had structures and RV's burn."

According to Simmons, there have been nearly 200 brush fires in March.

The National Weather Service issued multiple red flag days in which burning was not recommended due to conditions.

However, according to documents, residents of St. Clair County ignored these warnings, prompting County Board Chairman Mark Kern, Sheriff Richard Watson and Emergency Management Director Herb Simmons to ban open burning.

The only exception to the burning ban is recreational fire pits and cooking devices.

St. Clair County now joins Madison and Monroe Counties in the Metro East in putting restrictions on yard waste burning.
