MEHLVILLE, Mo.—The St. Louis County bomb and arson unit is investigating a fire that killed a disabled man and severely injured his mother as she tried to save him.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that 43-year-old Jimmy Beaton died Saturday after the fire in Mehlville area.

Beaton lived in a converted garage attached to his mother’s home. His mother discovered the fire about 7 p.m. Saturday and found her son in his burning bed. Police say Beaton could not get himself out of bed due to his disability.

The mother dragged Beaton out of the garage to a hallway but could go no further. She tried to douse the flames with a garden hose until firefighters arrived. She suffered burns to her arms and hands.
