ST. CHARLES, Mo. (KMOV.com) -- Ten lanes of traffic on the Blanchette Bridge was reduced to six lanes Sunday evening. MoDOT warned motorists to use alternate routes, and that's what they did.
MoDOT says the first morning rush hour showed a decrease in traffic on I-70 by about 1,000 vehicles and higher volumes on the recommended detours Route 370 and Route 364.
Route 364 saw the largest increase in traffic, although there were delays at the exits at Route 141 and I-270. According to MoDOT reports, more than 5,000 more drivers chose to take Route 364 Monday morning instead on I-70. About 1,000 more drivers used Route 370, according to MoDOT.
The bridge normally has five lanes going in each direction, but all westbound lanes have been shut down. Now, the eastbound lanes have been split into three lanes in each direction, with a concrete barrier in the middle.
The Blanchette Bridge is not expected to reopen until Fall 2013.
