(KMOV) – The taxpayers in Belleville may have to pay $1.5 million after the city tore down two buildings after a fire last year.  The problem is the city never checked with the owners or the EPA before demolishing the buildings and sending asbestos into the air.

Ronnie Phillips is suing Belleville for $1 million and $3500 in lost rent for every month since the fire 15 months ago.

The Illinois EPA is considering its own legal action because both buildings contained asbestos which remains on the site.

Belleville wants Phillips and the other building owner Chet Nance to cut down the weeds on the site where the businesses once were located.
