(KMOV) – A special sales tax that was promised to only be temporary is now under reconsideration to become permanent in Belleville.
More than two dozen residents showed up to Belleville City Hall Monday night to express their frustrations. Many feel city leaders are spending money in the wrong places and wonder why they are asking to extend the sales tax.
Mayor Mark Eckert says the extra cash has generated $1.2 million for the city of Belleville.
The mayor says it doesn’t apply to groceries and medications but will apply at places like Walmart and restaurants.
I spoke with some residents who feel they were made a promise back in 2011 and city leaders need to stick with that promise.
Belleville city council will vote August 5 on the recommendation to extend the sales tax. News 4 will make sure to keep you updated on if the tax will remain.
