(KMOV) – A man is recovering after falling off a barge into the Mississippi River early Thursday morning.

Granite City firefighters say the 22-year-old man was working near the 3100 block of W. 20th St. around 1:30 a.m. when he plummeted eight feet down onto the barge. He then fell another four feet into the water.

Officials say the man, who was wearing a flotation device, suffered a back injury.

He was taken to the hospital in stable condition.
