(KMOV) – The 41st Annual Great Forest Park Balloon Race will officially kick off with the Balloon Glow and fireworks Friday night.

The Balloon Glow will be held beginning at 7 p.m. at Central Field and will contain many of the hot air balloons participating in Saturday’s race.

The event, which involves the balloons firing up to light up the night sky, will go on until about 9:15 p.m. and will end with a fireworks show.

The Great Forest Park Balloon Race festivities on Saturday will begin at the same place at 12 p.m. Several events will be held until the opening ceremonies start at 3:30 p.m.

The race will start with the release of the Energizer Bunny balloon (AKA “The Hare”) at 4:30 p.m. The rest of the balloons will be released about 15 minutes later.

The race was founded in 1973 and is unique for being one of the only hot air balloon races held in the middle of a major city.

More than 150,000 spectators are expecting to be on hand.
