(KMOV) -- The complaints are growing about foul smelling water that many Metro East residents say "tastes funny."
Today, Matt Klosterman, Superintendent of Belleville District #118, told me that children and staff in more than half of the district's 11 schools have complained about the water coming out of the fountains. Since Illinois American Water insists the water is safe, there's no plan to shut down the fountains at the schools.
A water company spokesman says low water levels in the Mississippi River are creating conditions that make the water taste and smell different, but the water is still safe to drink. The water company says the smell and taste will be normal if the water is refrigerated for an hour.
