FLORISSANT, Missouri (KMOV) -- The Florissant Police Department is warning residents about scam artists using a Florissant officer injured in an ambush attack to rip off good-hearted residents.

Officials on Thursday said an anonymous group claiming to be Florissant officers are calling area residents and soliciting monetary donations for officer Vernon.

Vernon was hospitalized Monday morning after getting shot three times by a burglary suspect. Vernon’s family on Thursday said a spinal injury suffered in the attack will probably keep him paralyzed for the rest of his life.

The department wants to make the public aware they are in no way soliciting donations over the phone.

Anyone contacted by one of the solicitors is asked to call police.

For anyone wishing to make a legitimate donation to officer Vernon and his family, donations can be made to:

Florissant Police Welfare Association
C/O Officer Mike Vernon
