(KMOV.com) – Authorities have urged several homeowners near Hillsboro to evacuate because they believe a dam on an impound creek is close to breaking.

It was reported that a person fishing near the dam called authorities Friday evening saying the dam was compromised and could break at any time.

Authorities urged 42 homeowners who live nearby to evacuate until further notice, but the evacuation was not mandatory. According to authorities, livestock that were close to the dam have been moved to a safe location.

Late Friday night, authorities were able to create a trench which aided in draining the water.

The dam impounds the Murril Creek Branch to form a seven acre lake just south of Hillsboro and is located near the 1500 block of Castle Ranch Road.

The Red Cross is helping the families that were told to evacuate.
