(KMOV.com) – A St. Charles woman said a viral video that was taken out of context caused her to receive a lot of social media backlash.

A video where Alexandra Bennett-Leach got down on one knee and presented a ring to her fiance went viral. Leach said she presented the ring weeks after he gave one to her.

“Something sweet. Something that our friends and family would enjoy,” Bennett-Leach said. “By the end of the night it was up to 600 shares. Then it got to 6,000, then 20,000.”

Facebook friends were soon outnumbered by haters. Syndicated radio host Rickey Smiley shared the video on his Facebook page, where people left cruel comments. One person commented that Alexandria’s “not proposing, she’s begging.” Other comments quoted the Bible, calling her a bad Christian.

There was no caption or explanation attached to video to provide context. A multimedia instructor told News 4 it is an example of a viral video gone bad.

“People are looking for the dramatic, the wild, and that’s what they got! But ultimately there are people on the other side of those anonymous comments that obviously are going to be impacted by the words of others,” Don Goble said.

Bennett-Leach and her fiancé told News 4 they spoke to the producers of the Rickey Smiley Show, who told them this story will appear on the talk show’s Facebook page so the record can be set straight.
