(KMOV.com) -- A local newspaper was the victim of a Facebook hoax Tuesday.

The Telegraph in Alton tells News 4 someone put together a phony Facebook page that looks like the real thing.

The Facebook page is for “The Alton Telegraph.” The real paper says it dropped “Alton” from its name years ago.

The phony Facebook page has profanity and racist comments posted on it.

Unfortunately for The Telegraph, the site looks real enough to fool several people who have called the paper with concerns.

“It has our logo on it,” said Jim Shrader, publisher of the paper. “It has reposts of our legitimate stories that are being added to this website, or this Facebook page, and so somebody’s going to a great deal of effort to make it look like a legitimate Telegraph Faceook page.”

Shrader says the paper has contacted Facebook several times to have the page taken down.

Facebook told the telegraph it is “looking into it.”
