EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) -- A southwestern Illinois man has been ordered to spend more than a half century in prison in connection with a shooting death last year near an Alton elementary school.

Twenty-two-year-old Marcus Baldwin of Alton was sentenced Thursday in Madison County to 57 years in prison. He was convicted last month of first-degree murder and two counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm.

Authorities say 19-year-old Dantavier Thompson was shot in the head in July 2012 as he drove past a home and shouted something at men gathered there. The car continued on and crashed into Lovejoy Elementary School playground equipment.

Prosecutors have charged two people who testified at Baldwin's trial with perjury and another person with harassing a witness. Their cases are pending.
