ST. LOUIS (AP) -- A major employer in downtown St. Louis plans to leave its 44-story high-rise and disperse its estimated 2,000 workers to outlying locations in the city and St. Louis County.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (bit.ly/1audTuZ ) reports that AT&T will vacate One AT&T Center on Chestnut Street by 2015. The newspaper cited a union official who said he received an email bout the pending move Thursday.

AT&T and its predecessor Southwestern Bell have occupied the building since its construction in 1986. The company’s lease expires in 2017.

A company spokeswoman did not immediately comment about the planned departure from downtown’s third-tallest building. Only the Gateway Arch and Metropolitan Square are taller.
