Ex-Ill. cop's hearing feels like real murder trial

JOLIET, Ill. (AP) — Family members, investigators, clergy and even a psychic have spent weeks testifying in an Illinois courtroom — yet Drew Peterson's murder trial hasn't even started.

The hearing will determine what hearsay, or second-hand, evidence jurors could hear during the former police officer's trial for the death of his third wife, Kathleen Savio. It may also be a legal dress rehearsal.

Testimony has exposed serious flaws in the police investigation and Peterson's deteriorating relationship with his fourth wife, who disappeared in 2007.

More than 60 prosecution witnesses have testified, some saying both women feared Peterson. Defense attorneys plan to call about 20 witnesses.

A judge will decide whether the testimony will be allowed at trial.
