ST. LOUIS (AP) — The city clerk of a small northeast Missouri town has been indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly embezzling about $150,000 of city funds.

The indictment against 60-year-old Lou Ann Allred was announced Friday by acting U.S. Attorney Michael Reap.

Callao is the longtime city clerk in Callao, a town of 290 residents in Macon County. Reap says that instead of depositing payments for city services into Callao's bank accounts, she used the money for personal purposes.

The indictment also accuses Allred of writing Callao checks to herself without approval, and forging the mayor's signature.

Allred did not have a listed phone number, and it wasn't clear if she had an attorney.
