JACKSON, Mo. (AP) — A southeast Missouri man is battling Alzheimer's and losing part of his memory, but he's fighting to hold onto something he loves.

The Southeast Missourian reports that former bricklayer Bill Beussink of Jackson is helping his son-in-law complete the restoration of a cabin built from 100-year-old oak logs.

Beussink is 84. His symptoms began about five years ago and have worsened. His daughter says his short-term memory is gone, but he still has good long-term memory.

The log home could be become a home for Beussink's collection of memorabilia and antiques, a collection that includes a 1950s Gibson steel guitar, a coat worn by country music star Tammy Wynette and even a meteorite.
