Jane Higgins, a spokeswoman for the Olympic champion's namesake, told the Belleville News-Democrat for a story Saturday that board members hope the layoffs will be temporary.

Higgins says the center is expected to reopen on June 15 after its annual two-week spring break. The employees were let go Tuesday.

Higgins says Lecia Rivers, the center's executive director, will stay to help the organization through "a transition."

She says the organization's board is also being restructured.

The Jackie Joyner-Kersee Foundation, which owns the center, has struggled financially in recent years, running deficits of $492,804 and $936,328 in 2007 and 2006, respectively.
