GRANITE CITY, Ill. (KMOV.com) – Police have arrested four juveniles they say are responsible for shooting and killing a man outside a home in Granite City late Thursday night.
According to police, the suspects were taken into custody late Saturday night and early Sunday morning. While the suspects are all juveniles, police said they believe three of them will be able to be tried as adults.
A neighbor told News 4 she went outside after hearing three gunshots around 10 p.m. and found Charles Weiss, 54, in the back yard of the home where he lived along 12th Street. Police said they believe the shooting happened in an alley between Meridian and Edwardsville.
Weiss was taken to Gateway Regional Medical Center, where he later died.
Friends of the victim say he was a Vietnam War veteran who lived in the neighborhood and was walking back from a nearby convenience store when he was shot.
The neighbor said as she applied pressure to his wounds to stop the bleeding, he told her he was attacked by three or four men
Authorities said all of the suspects remained in custody Monday. Their case was scheduled to be presented to the Madison County State’s Attorney Tuesday afternoon.
