ST. CHARLES, Mo. (KMOV.com) – A pregnant women was injured and six condo units were destroyed after a four-alarm fire broke out in St. Charles Monday morning.
Steve Brown with Central County Fire said the fire happened inside the complex at 1380 Heritage Landing, just west of the Page Avenue Extension and south of Highway 94.
More than 60 firefighters from 19 departments fought the blaze, which started on a second-floor deck of the three-floor complex.
Despite hot and dry conditions, they were able to get it under control after about an hour.
A pregnant victim was transported to Mercy Hospital due to smoke inhalation. She remains in satisfactory condition. Two firefighters were overcome by heat, but are doing fine.
In addition to the six units destroyed, 12 units suffered smoke and heat damage. Residents in those units were forced to find somewhere else to stay for at least Monday night.
Officials said 12 other units sustained damage from just smoke. Fire officials estimate the damage from the fire to be more than $500,000.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
