(KMOV) – Three workers were hospitalized after an apparent acid spill accident at a Jefferson County plant Tuesday morning.
Officials said the victims suffered burns at the Doe Run Co. smelter plant in the 800 block of Main St. in Herculaneum just before 6:45 a.m.
Gary Hughes, general manager of Doe Run's Smelter Division, said the employees were injured after a small sulfuric acid leak at the facility.
“It appears that during the course of the inspection, an employee may have accidentally come into contact with the line and the connection broke apart,” said Hughes.
One employee was immediately air-lifted to a St. Louis hospital. Another was taken by ambulance to Jefferson Regional Hospital and has been released. The third employee had minor contact with the acid and was driven to a local urgent care.
Names of the workers were not released and their conditions were unknown.
Hughes said the damaged line had since been isolated and no one else was in danger.
Doe Run is a metals mining company and a leading producer of lead. Concentrates from mining and milling operations are sent to the smelter in Herculaneum, which the company describes as one of the world’s largest primary lead-producing smelters.
