SWANSEA, Ill.—Investigators say a fight between a retired southwestern Illinois state trooper and his son led to the older man’s death two days before his son killed himself.

Authorities were looking for 36-year-old Jarad Daughtrey to question him about his father’s death.

Police say they tracked him to Trailway Lodge motel in Fairview Heights on Wednesday, where he shot himself to death.

Investigators say his father, 61-year-old David Daughtrey, was found dead inside a house in the 200 block of Mimosa Avenue in Swansea Tuesday afternoon. He shared the home with Jarad Daughtry.

St. Clair County deputy coroner Danny Haskenhoff says an autopsy Wednesday didn’t reveal how the father died. Toxicology tests are pending.

Investigators told the Belleville News-Democrat the Daughtreys had a physical altercation Monday that contributed to the elder Daughtrey’s death that day.
