ST. LOUIS -- (KMOV.com) A 2-year-old child was hospitalized after being shot by his father in north St. Louis County Friday morning.
Authorities said the child, identified as Anthony Sanders, was at a home in the 400 block of Midlothian Road around 9:30 a.m. when his father accidentally shot him once in the chest.
The father took the child to Christian Northeast Hospital for treatment. The victim was later airlifted to Children’s Hospital and remains in critical condition.
Police said a 3-year-old girl was in the home at the time of the shooting, but she was not injured.
The father was brought in for questioning and admitted to accidentally shooting the child. He has since been released.
Police later searched the house and recovered a handgun.
Latoya Langston lives in the area and says she’s known the father for years, but never knew guns were in the house.
“I’m just in shock. I have no clue of where weapons would come from,” she said. “He always has the kids, so I don’t know where a weapon was available.”
The St. Louis County Prosecutor will determine whether any charges will be filed.
