ST. LOUIS COUNTY (KMOV) -- A pilot and his passenger suffered minor injuries Sunday afternoon in a biplane crash near Creve Coeur Airport.

The Stearman Model 75 biplane crashed around 3:15 p.m. near River Valley Drive and Highway 394.

The pilot, 73-year-old Al Stix, said he was performing a touch-and-go landing maneuver when the biplane's engine failed.

"I had to go back and put it down on the ground, and there was no place to put it," Stix said.

The plane crashed into a row of trees before it came to rest vertically in a creek on the south side of Highway 394, just south of the airport.

"It looks a lot worse than it really is," Stix said. "If you're going to crash something, this is the plane to crash."

Stix, of St. Louis County, said he had been flying for about 15 to 20 minutes before the crash.

The plane is part of the Historic Aircraft Restoration Museum at Creve Coeur Airport.
